I basically taught myself to braid about a year ago (I'm 27). My mom passed away when I was eight, so I never really had someone to teach me these things. I'm pretty proud of my basic braiding skills now.
Fortunately, I recently stumbled across this FANTASTIC tutorial for the fishtail braid, which I had assumed to be waaaaay harder than it actually is! (You know what they say about assuming...it makes an A$$ of U and ME...man I'm a nerd.)

((Mine didn't look quite as nice as Katie's above, but it's a start.))
For those of you who prefer video tutorials, Lauren Conrad and The Beauty Department produced this little clip.
Something about cutting a clear elastic every time you want to do a fishtail braid rubs me the wrong way though. Seems wasteful. Her results, however, are gorg.
I'll keep practicing. Maybe by next summer I'll need a new braid to master.
